Out of the Blue: President Bush’s Last-minute Chance for Conservation
Before he steps down as the leader of the free world in January, American President George W. Bush has been given an eleventh-hour opportunity to redeem himself in the eyes of environmentalists and conservationists around the globe. President Bush is currently considering approving a proposal that would turn approximately 2.3 million square kilometres of water, reefs and atolls in the Pacific into protected area under the American Antiquities Act of 1906. Under the act, the president has the power to turn this vast expanse of marine habitat into a US National Monument, conserving it for future generations — even without the approval of congress. The decision could turn Bush, whose environmental policy has been heavily criticised by conservationists worldwide, into the man who single-handedly protected more of the surface of the Earth than any other individual.
